The Story of Gulluoglu

Nejat Güllü Bey If we are talking about Baklava, Gulluoglu is the first name that comes into mind. Our story begins almost 160 years ago at 1871. Gulluoglu is considered as the biggest School as they trained almost every Baklava cooks in Turkey. This delightful legend stayed at the starting city called Gaziantep until 1949. On that day, Mustafa Gullu decided to go out of the shell and came to Istanbul. It was on that day that first Gulluoglu store was open in the city where the continents meet. Although it was unorthodox, he decided to do advertisement in order to get people to know more about baklava. Mustafa Gullu stayed at Istanbul until the year 1960 had to return to Gaziantep due to health issues.

A Brand is Born...

Trained by his uncle Halit Gullu at Gaziantep, the eldest son of Mustafa Gullu, Nejat Gullu became a true baklava master. As a master, he came to Istanbul at 1969, and stood up for his father's place in the centre of everything. Even at that time, he took some radical decisions and put his plans of being a world brand in motion. As he kept working on his father's first store, he was sure that the little place they had couldn't handle the demand. It was mandatory to move to a more central location. So he moved to the historic spot at Karaköy, which is still in use today. He was successful from the first day: The amount of baklava sold were doubled in one day. At that new spot, everything went fine. New items such as chocolate or Turkish Delight were also sold at that location. But all that success wasn't enough for Nejat Gullu. He had two aims in his head: Having more branches and going global. In order to attain these goals, he separated himself from his father and brothers, he first opened a factory at Hasanpaşa, then a store near Grand Bazaar. That was Gulluoglu's first branch. With this move, he started to move to a more global perspective.

In a short time, he started exporting Baklava, firstly to Greece. During this period, new branches were opened continuously. The word Baklava was almost synonymous with the name Gulluoglu. Nejat Gullu, had planned to move to a bigger factory where they could handle the ever growing demand and exporting to the world. On the year 1996 he bought a field as big as 2.200 square meters and started to build a new factory. This project finished at 2001 and a kitchen as big as 7.200 square meters was opened. This kitchen considered as "the world's largest baklava creation centre". But not only baklava is made in this place. Cakes, Turkish delights, Su boregi, ice cream, chocolate, yufka, pogaca and other savouries is also being created. Gulluoglu is adding new tastes to its menu everyday, with the help of its research and development department. From Gaziantep Gulluoglu moved to Kagithane, they produce to major countries across the world such as USA, Libya, Netherlands, Canada, United Kingdom and Iraq. Keeping the legacy of a 160 years old family, Gulluoglu still protects its roots…
